Regional Midwifery Summit

To advance the profession of midwifery globally by promoting autonomous midwives as the most appropriate caregivers for childbearing women Regional Midwifery Summit was organized at Karachi from 09-10th October 2019.this Summit was organized by Midwifery Association of Pakistan along with WHO and UNFPA. From Ziauddin University College of nursing three faculties were the members of Task force and scientific committee.

On 10th of October 2019, the day started talking about the situation of midwife across the globe where the representatives from different countries like Bangladesh, Bahrain, Nepal, Indonesia Turkey, Iran, and Afghanistan etc shared their views and experiences. Later on the program was continued with the sessions on different topic. ZUCON faculty (Ms. Saima, Ms. Ashraf and Dr Farah) were the Facilitators for the session on, “Research & Scholarly work for Midwives.” Whereas Ms. Alia Nasir (Principal & Associate Professor) was the chair of the session on Role of Midwife in ECD, and plenary discussion on Community based solutions on Family planning, Reproductive Health in Midwifery, and Midwifery Regulations.

Pre- Regional Midwifery Workshop

Pre regional workshop was organized at ZUCON on 8th of October 2019. The topic of which was, “Post-partum care in transition: Role of Midwives in obstetrics and rehabilitation.” The faculties and the midwifery students as well as senior midwives from Dr ziauddin hospital attended the session. Fortunately Dr. Aijaz Fatima graced the event where she shared the history of Ziauddin hospital. Different teaching learning strategies along with hands on practice sessions were used in order to create the impact.

Report for Implementation Plan for Nursing and Midwifery

In connection to start the Degree program in Sindh’s Nursing Institute, a highest level meeting was conducted on October 8th 2019 at Gulab Hall, Movenpick Hotel   in Karachi where Federal Ministry Lead consultants Dr Ghulam Nabi Qazi, Director NHSRC Dr Sabeen, Leaders from PNC, UNFPA, Jhapiego’s, AKUSONAM, DUHS, Ziauddin University College of Nursing, SNEB, and Directorate of Nursing analyzed the situations and reiterated their resolve to hasten further steps. The few impediments were identified that are to be resolved the earliest. The Director thanked the supporting agencies and honored technocrats from Federal Ministry for their commitment and vowed to seek Sindh Government helps to implement the plan. Ms Alia Nasir, Principle ZCON contributed her part by emphasizing and encouraging the participants to strengthen the Nursing profession in the country.

DAY 5: THE GRAND TAMBOLA+CLOSING CEREMONY+NURSING RESEARCH SEMINAR

On the 5th day, The Grand Tambola was organized by Students Council to bring some fun and excitement to the students. Cash prizes were also distributed to the winners of the game rounds.

On the same day, Nursing Research Seminars were also organized by the students of graduating year BSN-IV and topics of the seminars were:

  • Nurse Patient Relationship
  • GCS Monitoring
  • Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of High Alert Medication
  • Importance of Discharge Teaching
  • Awareness on Blood Transfusion

Then, closing ceremony was organized by Students Council which was attended by Mr. Shabbar Virani (Cooridator Student Affairs, Ziauddin University). In the closing ceremony, winners of the cultural day, sports day, health fair and nursing seminar were announced. The announcements of New Students Council members were also done by Mr. Shabbar Virani.

DAY 4: HEALTH AND FUN MELA

On 4th day of EC WEEK 2019, a Health and Fun Mela was organized by the students of MSN-I, BSN-I and BSN-II. This Health and Fun Mela was organized to educate the students about various health issues and how to overcome these issues. There were some health assessment setups and also stalls regarding nutrition. The Chief Guests who attended this Health and Fun Mela were Dr Inayat Ali Khan (Expert from Neurosurgery department) and Dr Tazeen Saeed from Aga Khan University Hospital (Assistant Dean, Research and Assistant Proffesor AKUSON). Dr Tazeen Saeed highly appreciated the efforts of MSN and BSN students for accomplishment of the assigned tasks related to Health Fair. She emphasized on the fact that Health fairs serve many purposes. The most important purpose is found within Healthcare’s mission statement — helping people live the healthiest lives possible. The central purpose of a community health fair is to help individuals be healthier by seeking to engage the public in conversation about common health issues and concerns. The fair was a grand success as it provides basic health screenings for little or no cost. Simple health screenings such as blood pressure checks, glucose and cholesterol blood tests, body composition, vision and hearing tests, offer both positive health feedback and identify at risk individuals.

DAY-1: OPENING CEREMONY AND CULTURE SHOW

The Extracurricular week for the year 2019 was organized by Student Council of  Ziauddin University College of Nursing for the students to freshen up their minds and take a break from tough study schedules and assignments deadlines as it results in improved physical and mental health.

This wonderful week started from “Opening Ceremony”, attended by chief guests which included Dr. Aijaz Fatima (Pioneer of Dr. Ziauddin Group of Hospitals), Dr. Sarah Salman (Head of Office, World Health Organization Sindh Office), Dr. Shireen Mansoor (Medical Superintendent of Dr Ziauddin Hospital, North Campus) and Dr. Inayat Ali Khan. On this auspicious occasion, Dr. Sarah Salman appreciated and motivated Nursing students towards the significance of this profession and the responsibility that a Nurse holds for the betterment of mankind. She also highlighted the importance of recreational and extra-curricular activities for building sharp and active minds.

A Culture Show was also held on Day 1 of Extracurricular WEEK which was organized by Students of BSN year III, in which they took the students and guest to a journey of the beautiful cultures of Pakistan.

Participation in Nursing Research Fair by MSN Students ZCON

A Young Scholar Research Exhibition was organized on 5th August, 2019 at Aga Khan University which was the first student led research event in Sindh for MSN students. Students of MSN Year I and II along with faculty members attended the event with complete zest and zeal and interacted energetically with students and HODs from LUMHS, AKU AND DUHS.Ms Alia Nasir, Principal ZCON played a key role as an active panelist in the discussion phase. It was a moment of pride to hear about Ms.Daizi Jafar, Sr. Lecturer at Ziauddin College of Nursing and MSN student secured first position in poster presentation entitled “Self Esteem of patients receiving chemotherapy treatment in Tertiary care hospital, Karachi, Pakistan

SNEB EXAMINATION 2018 – 2019

Sindh Nurses Examination Board (SNEB) examination was held in College of Nursing, Ziauddin University as it was selected as the center for examination. The invigilation was done by the faculty members of College of Nursing, Ziauddin University, ZCON. The transparency was maintained and the examination activities were successfully carried out from 20th of March, 2019 till 10th of April, 2019.

ACTIVITIES ORGANIZED FOR MENTALLY ILL PATIENTS AT “KARWAN-E-HAYAT: INSTITUTE FOR MENTAL HEALTH CARE”

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.

Mental health problems are common but help is available. People with mental health problems can get better and many recover completely. In Pakistan there are some mental health care institutions but the students of BSN-III of Ziauddin University College of Nursing visited and organized some activities at “KARWAN-E-HAYAT: INSTITUTE FOR MENTAL HEALTH CARE”. It is a voluntary welfare non-government organization, registered under the 1984 Companies Ordinance and active in caring for mental health patients since its establishment in 1983.

A SEMINAR ON INTERNATIONAL NURSES DAY’19 AT AWARI TOWERS

The students of BScN year IV attended a seminar on 19th of May, 2019 held at Avari Towers, Karachi. The seminar was conducted on “International Nurses Day’ 19”. The theme for the year 2019 was “Nursing: The Balance of Mind, Body, and Spirit”.

The seminar was about the congruent and holistic approach required for the Nursing profession. It was a great learning experience for students. They loved the initiative, insights and the exposure they got as a result of the event. At the end of the event, group photos were clicked.
